Reader Mail: Microdermals

July 3rd, 2009

Posted by admin in tattoo | No Comments »

Question: “I’ve been looking into getting these on my hips as an alternative to a bar bell, because of the high rejection rates. I know micros can reject too but i was hoping you could tell me anything about the process and such. I know yours did reject and i was wondering how big the scars are? and is this something you would recommend?”

Answer: The hip area is “iffy” for any piercing - microdermals or not. It really depends on your body shape, your level and type of physical activity, and your clothing. Bending, rubbing, pressure, and even your own physiology play a part in how your body handles being pierced and whether or not it decides to evict the jewelry. All you can do is try, keeping in mind the things that could possibly encourage rejection and do your best to avoid those things. The good news is that the scars left behind from my microdermals are very small and they have also become lighter in color over the past few months. I still recommend micros and think they’re a great piercing option. As always, find an artist who is experienced in doing this type of piercing to reduce the risk of problems.

Elvis and the Saint

July 2nd, 2009

Posted by admin in tattoo | No Comments »

I met Kristin and Jason at the 7th Avenue Street Fair in Park Slope on Father’s Day.

Street fairs in New York City generally occur in the summer months and, to an inkspotter like me, they are heaven on earth.

Well, perhaps I exaggerate. They are also hot, crowded, and dangerous. I have seen many a fair-goer clipped by a slowly-moving baby stroller. But I digress.

There were tattoos aplenty at the street fair, and one is so overwhelmed by the sheer volume of great ink, it is often paralyzing to pick just one. Compare it to letting a child lose in a candy store, and tell them they can have all the candy they want, as long as they spend just a dollar.

So when I saw a few people walking along that were festooned with tattoos, I stopped them as soon as I could wend my way through the crowd and get their attention.

When someone has “lost count” of how many tattoos they have, it is safe to say that they have a lot.

Kristin offered up her inner right forearm:

She loves Elvis Presley and this portrait, based on a shot of him from the film Girls! Girls! Girls!, is wonderfully done.

She noted that this was an older Elvis, but definitely pre-Vegas.

Jason, who was walking with Kristin, and also incredibly inked, offered up his right forearm as well:

Upon returning from a trip to India several years ago, Jason brought home a poster of a Hindu saint. He loved the poster so much, he decided to have it tattooed.

I’ll be honest here. I was initially disappointed that these were the tattoos that Jason and Kristin offered. Not that they’re bad tattoos. Far from it. But, they had other work I admired more.

However, I do ask people which tattoos they’d like to share, so I certainly have no right to complain.

But, in the week or so since I shot these photos, I’ve come to appreciate the level of skill and artistry with which these pieces were created.

Both were inked by Josh Carlton at the Great American Tattoo Company in Indianapolis.

If you look closely, he has infused each tattoo with colorful highlights that really accentuate the tattoos with an extra element of artistry.

It’s a brilliant effect.

Thanks to both Kristin and Jason for sharing these two amazing tattoos with us here on Tattoosday!

Tattoo Removal Cream - A Great Alternative For Getting Rid of Unwanted Tattoos

July 1st, 2009

Posted by admin in tattoo | No Comments »

Using a Tattoo Removal Cream is a much cheaper and safer alternative for removing a tattoo as opposed to surgical procedures such as laser removal therapy. The laser therapy can cost as much as $3,500 and sometimes even more! Tattoo removal cream costs around $40-$150 a bottle, depending on the strength of the cream. Going down this route is much simpler. You can apply the cream on yourself in the comfort of your own home.

Tattoo removal cream requires no doctor visits because it is completely done on your time. You don’t have to worry about doctor office hours and wasting gas driving to the office. Another great benefit about the tattoo removal cream is that it is virtually painless. Laser removal therapy is two to three times more painful than the tattoo was when being applied to the skin. Another negative to surgical procedures such as laser removal is the scaring.

Surgical procedures leave scaring on the area. Often times, the scaring is in the exact shape that the tattoo was when inked in. The removal cream fade the tattoo over time to completely invisible.

In One Month’s Time: The tattoo will show that it has begun the process and is starting to fade
In Three Month’s Time: The tattoo will be approximately half way removed. The fading will be very noticeable.
In Six Month’s Time: The unwanted tattoo will be almost gone, if not 100% gone. On average, it takes around six months for the fading process to be complete. Sometimes there will be a small amount still visible after six months, but that is unusual.

Reader Mail: Tattoo Inks and Allergic Reactions

June 29th, 2009

Posted by admin in tattoo | No Comments »

Question: “About a month ago I received my fifth tattoo, however this one didn’t go as well as i had planned. apparently I was had an allergic reaction to the brown tattoo ink which the doctor later labled as contact dermatitis. At first I was thinking to myself that I just won’t get that color again, but to my misfortune the doctor told me not to get any more tattoos whatsoever, because even though it may be one color now it is possible that it may spread, causing the throat glands to swell and possibly become fatal. The question I have is this. Is there a way I can find out whether or not I am allergic to tattoo inks? Another thing I had a mild problem with a tattoo i got before that, I think it might have been a small reaction, the color was red, but i had gotten some red after i had received that one. the tattoist after looking at my most recent reaction said that he was almost certain that he used the same brand of ink. is it possible that i might just be allergic to the brands?”

Answer: While I admittedly have no medical background, I think your doctor is being paranoid. It sounds like they’re just against tattoos in the first place, so this is a great excuse for them to scare you with their extremist worst-case-scenario views to keep you from getting more ink. I have never heard of anyone dying from anaphylactic shock due to an allergic reaction to tattoo ink. However, that’s not to say it could never happen and it certainly wouldn’t be worth dying just to get a tattoo, so here’s what I would do: Get a second opinion.

Go to a dermatologist, not just a family physician. Make sure the dermatologist doesn’t have any preconceived issues with tattoos and then explain the situation to them. Get tested to find out what you are allergic to (which is a simple blood test now, not the old-fashioned prick test) and maybe you can even ask if they can test for tattoo ink as well. Get a sample of the ink from your artist. Find out what brand it actually is and request an MSDS fact sheet from the manufacturer. Do whatever research you feel is necessary to determine - without prejudice - whether you should get another tattoo again or not.

Jared Shares His Vegan Tattoo

June 28th, 2009

Posted by admin in tattoo | No Comments »

I met Jared while he was waiting for a train in Penn Station.

After the Manhattan Mall food court closed last summer, I discovered this wide expanse of Penn Station (especially the Amtrak area) was great for inkspotting when the weather made normal traipsing about unappealing.

Jared’s ink runs down the length of his arm, from the top of his right bicep, down to the inner part of his forearm.

As a Vegan, Jared did his research, and sought out a tattoo artist that could give him a Vegan tattoo:

There’s a school of thought that some tattoo inks are not “vegan,” in the sense that they incorporate glycerine from animal fat, or they use bone char in the black inks. See this article here.

Some artists refute this as gimmicky, and here is a more skeptical view point from a Vegan. But many Vegans who are steadfast in their ideals find the idea of a purely vegan tattoo appealing. I featured another Vegan tattoo back in October 2007 here.

Jared, who is the musical director for the national touring company of the show “Spring Awakening“, went to Cary at Body Electric Tattooing & Piercing in Hollywood for this custom design.

The top section of flowers includes at least one chrysanthemum. The bottom part spells out the word “Vegan” in twisting, viny, letters.

Jared’s whole arm took three sessions and ultimately embodies the Vegan lifestyle, not just in words and design, but in the ink used to create the art.

Thanks to Jared for sharing his work with us here on Tattoosday!
